Chapter 20 is now released, read it here.
Because this is the start of a new story arc (Old Conflicts Renewed), I modified the behavior of the "The Story" menu. Now you can click on one of those two links to expand a menu containing the actual chapter links. This is mostly to avoid the menu becoming excessively tall as chapters are released. I might also provide some specific information on the storty arc pages when necessary, so look there from time to time.
Overall, I'm happy to finally get things going again. Writing is hard work, but not writing at all is dreadful.
Sorry for not updating this site in months, but I was busy with planning the next part of the story and distracted by other things. I really don’t feel too bad about letting this place get stale, though. I just have to keep in mind that some arrogant webcomic artists post something like one page every three months. Even saying that now makes me feel much better.
I’m more or less set chapters 20-29. Most recently, I wrote something like a summary and distributed it to two people who I trust for opinions. After listening to what they have to say and making some minor adjustments based on the feedback, we’ll finally start seeing some new content on this site. It’s about time.
So what’s next? I won’t say too much for now, but the next story (as I’ve probably said before) centers on Braya. Meeki will have some page space as well, but this is mostly a part of the story devoted to exploring the character of Braya. Many details of her history and life haven’t yet been determined, and now’s our chance to find out. It isn’t necessarily a happy history, so I do warn you not to approach this with expectations of happy optimism.
You have Doctor Who to thank for what is to come. By the way, Tom Baker is the superior Doctor. Something about the older episodes is very charming and such fun. Their style of storytelling, though simple, became a greater influence to my mind than I expected. This isn’t to say that I’m planning to rip them off, but I wanted to take Meeki & Braya a little more in that kind of direction, where I can (mostly) isolate each arc of the story and give it a real mood and theme. I don’t know if I can really accomplish this so readily. We’ll see.
The posting of Chapter 19 marks the end of the "introductory" portion of Meeki & Braya.
This is actually kind of a rare occasion for me. I've partaken in various large projects like this in the past, but this is a first for one partitcular reason: I've managed to finish this thing and, looking back, don't find it repugnant and worthless. It is the curse of the creator to despise his own work, so maybe I'm breaking some important rules right now.
But the story must go on, and I definitely plan to continue. I'm going to take some time off to prepare the next story. Like Chapter 19, it will be from the viewpoint of Braya. It's about time that poor girl got some time in the spotlight, right? In some days I will write a little more about my aspirations in a BLAG entry. This time I actually promise to write it, unlike the last time I promised a BLAG entry.
Here's some happy music to celebrate.
Chapter 18 is now available, after a long delay. I'm very sorry about that. Things have been very distracting as of late. I will hopefully keep myself on track from now on.
Between Issue 1 and 2, I took a week off entirely from the work to rest. Between Issue 2 and 3, I took no time off, and now it seems that Issue 3 is coming to a close much more quickly that I expected. This is just an observation. Maybe I've simply gotten to the point where everything goes by fast like a blur. So many words typed and pages flying by that nothing about each particular step of the process seems so dramatic anymore. Whether or not this is a good thing, I'm not certain.
Chapter 18 happens to be the second to last chapter of Issue 3 and Away From Home. I do have the next story decided and in planning now. What I am undecided about is length. Away From Home takes three issues and I think it got stretched rather long. In light of my recent desire to write shorter stories, I may make the next part of the story stay only one issue in length. Some additional planning will help me determine if this is possible.
